Bands of the 21st Century

So this isn't really an update, but I wanted to share this picture with all the band geeks. I went to a marching band competition up here a few weeks ago and got to see a few of the bands we used to see at Valley or Ankeny. This is a picture of Rosemount's traveling trailer....er SEMI! Yes, that is actually a tractor trailer that they bought a few years ago and retrofitted for their marching band equipment. It made me laugh :)

P.S. - I thought they should have won, but Irondale got 1st place. These bands do some crazy stuff these days...

Very nice. I wonder if they have band parents driving or if they have to hire someone. Somehow I can't picture Bob Bateson (our neighbor who ended up driving the trailer on a regular basis. It was often parked right across from our house. And I remember after one particularly warm competition being enlisted to febreeze all the uniforms as they stunk like a locker room.) driving a rig like that.

I haven't seen a show since Kyle graduated 2 years ago. What crazy stuff did Irondale do? I'm excited to get my kids involved in band (but don't want them to grow up too fast..) :)

I believe it was band parents driving it. They sure looked like band parents. And I was told that someone (I assume parents) drove down to TX(?) to pick it up and drive it all the way back!

I remember the Febreeze day as well. I wasn't there, but I still have copies of the pictures you took of uniforms all over the Bateson's backyard...

Irondale did a show involving Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven". Which included a guy hooked up to a microphone in the pit reciting parts of the poem/short story(?). He was using a strange, spooky voice too so after the competition we kept repeating "...and the RAVEN...!!" It was just strange. I don't remember what Rosemount's show was about, but Eden Prairie (who was hosting the competition and is the HS where kids in the youth group I volunteer with attend)((that was a horrible sentence...)) did a cool show with an asian theme and had a huge Chinese dragon that the color guard ran around the field with at the end. One band a couple levels down had a synthesizer in their pit that gave their show an awesome '80s feel.

Like I said...bands do some crazy stuff these days!
